The Varsity Boat Club photograph collection documents men's crew at the University of Washington from 1906-1984, including images of coaches, rowers and rowing events in Seattle and elsewhere. Also included is an album owned by Coach Hiram Conibear, which contains 17 photos of the crew, including coxswain Walter Dunbar and rowers Bill Kirby, Doak Lowry and Dick Gloster, aboard the steamship SS City of Puebla en route to San Francisco, California for competition against Stanford and University of California, Berkeley in April 1907. There are a few images of the crew rowing, as well as images of Berkeley, California and the surrounding area.

Established in 1910, the Varsity Boat Club was begun by Coach Hiram Conibear to be a social organization for the varsity upperclassmen who rowed on the University of Washington crew team. The club was originally housed in the old Coast Guard Station, a temporary building constructed for the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition.
